Delta 8 is a cannabinoid that is not far off from the molecular structure of THC delta 9; Both are isomers of THC (each of two or more compounds with the same formula but a different arrangement of atoms in the molecule and different properties), but the main contrast lies in their chemical bonds – Delta 8 THC has a double bond on the eighth carbon chain, while Delta 9 THC has the same double bond on the ninth carbon chain (This double bond is thought to produce the intoxicating effects that make you feel high). Obviously, we know a little bit about delta 9 as the cannabinoid that has predominantly psychoactive properties and other therapeutic effects, but what is Delta 8? Research these days is sparse, but it is a cannabinoid that has been clinically researched in earlier years on its use and benefits. One study has discovered it could shrink cancer cells in rats and another study determined it can benefit pediatric cancer patients suffering nausea from chemotherapy treatments.
Some differences between the two:
- While delta 8 and delta 9 are both tetrahydrocannabinol and are almost identical chemically, they present differences. First off, while both are psychoactive, delta-8 has a lower psychotropic potency than delta-9. Many people seeking medical benefits from cannabis will be happy to hear this as they very well may be able to reap much of the potential medical benefits from delta 8 as they would delta 9 without the debilitating high.
- Secondly, delta-9 only acts on the CB1 receptors; whereas, delta-8 acts on both the CB1 and CB2 receptors. Delta-8 binds to the endocannabinoid system in a slightly different fashion because of the location of its double bond. The effects of delta-8 have more potential to affect more systems than delta-9.
- Nearly all delta-8 THC on the market today is manufactured from hemp-derived CBD, which makes it, in theory at least, part of a federally legal chain of origin.
To give a sense of delta-8’s potency relative to THC, delta-8 edible producers commonly measure and dose their gummies at more than twice the strength of THC gummies. In creating these standard gummies, producers are calculating that delta-8 is less than half as strong as regular THC, so a 25mg delta-8 gummy might equate to the effects of a 10mg THC gummy. It’s always recommended to take a little bit at first and then wait for the onset of effects before taking more. The consumption method will affect how quickly you feel those effects.
Benefits:
THC Delta 8 has a lot of benefits although it is lacking research, we can see that it has already helped many!
Delta 8 can increase our physical health. It reduces inflammation and alleviates various kinds of pain. Also, it’s often used for stimulating appetite, as it strongly affects CB2 receptors in the digestive system.
It is an excellent choice for improving mood, treating anxiety, and combating depression without side-effects while THC delta 9 can potentially produce paranoia and increase anxiety.
Delta 8 is much easier to control, and people say they often feel a sense of clarity, more focus, and the ability to breeze through their daily tasks. The light effect on CB1 receptors is perfect for easing the mind. Also, it has strong neuroprotective potential by activating certain neurotransmitters like ACH levels and regulating potassium and calcium channels in the central nervous system.
